Foreign Military Recruitment in Belgium, 1831
This hand-colored etching or lithograph satirizes Belgium's recruitment of foreign soldiers following independence. The left panel shows three military figures with annotations identifying their origins and characteristics—a common technique in early 19th-century satirical prints. The right panel depicts the recruitment process, with officers persuading a seated figure to enlist. The print employs exaggerated features and dress to mock foreign volunteers. The work descends from Gillray and Rowlandson's tradition of political ridicule through caricature, a lineage that would evolve into modern editorial cartooning and eventually comics. Hand-lettered text provides satirical commentary on each figure, characteristic of picture-sheet satire across Northern Europe.
