Dark Conversation: Life in Philadelphia, No. 1
This hand-colored etching depicts a street scene in Philadelphia where fashionably dressed Black figures converse while white pedestrians observe. The artist employs caricature conventions—exaggerated facial features, grotesque body proportions—prevalent in European print satire of the era. The title "Dark Conversation" plays on racial terminology. Part of the "Life in Philadelphia" series, this print descends from the tradition of Gillray and Rowlandson, using caricature as social commentary. Such prints circulated widely in the 1830s. The work exemplifies comic satire and popular print culture of the period.
