Dutch Student Life: A Satirical Composite
This lithographed page from a Leiden student almanac surveys university life through multiple comic scenes: carousing students, academic pretense, romantic entanglements, and bodily excess. The composition descends from 18th-century Hogarth sequences and Rowlandson's narrative prints, organizing separate vignettes across a single sheet to mock student types—the drunkard, the affected scholar, the lovesick youth. The grotesque physiognomies and exaggerated gestures reflect period caricature conventions. This format—multiple sequential illustrations on one page—directly prefigures the modern comic strip's visual vocabulary. The work participates in a long European tradition where graphic satire served as both social commentary and entertainment.
