Two Captains of the Coast
This wood engraving by H.L. Smits satirizes the ministerial dispatch regarding a privateering expedition of June 15, 1861. Two horsemen in period dress gesture toward a converted wagon-carriage at water's edge, where figures appear to be embarking on an illicit maritime venture. The print belongs to the Dutch political cartoon tradition, descended from Hogarth and Gillray, using comic exaggeration and visual pun to mock government policy and official incompetence. The awkward proportions of horse and vessel, the theatrical poses of the protagonists, and the cluttered beach scene convey ridicule through formal clumsiness. Published as a broadsheet spot-print—cheap, topical, and distributed widely—it represents how engraved satire functioned as popular commentary on state affairs before the modern newspaper cartoon emerged.
