Critical Review of the Theatrical Players of Doctor Schasz
· circa 1780

This Dutch satirical broadside targets political and military figures during the American Revolution and Anglo-Dutch conflicts of the 1780s. The text attacks named individuals—including William Griff, Goedhart, and Don Lopez—through mock theatrical critique, a favorite weapon of Enlightenment print satire. The format descends from a rich tradition of political commentary: the numbered, densely annotated text-sheet recalls Hogarth's explanatory prints and German Bilderbogen picture-sheets, while the caustic, personalized attacks echo Gillray and Rowlandson. Such broadsides reached wide audiences through coffeehouses and print shops, combining visual caricature with pointed written invective to mock statesmen, generals, and public figures. This print exemplifies how popular satire functioned as political speech in the age before mass journalism.
