Colonel Sar in Flight
This Dutch etching depicts a long-haired military officer on horseback, holding a wine glass and hammer while fleeing on a rearing horse. Surrounding text in Dutch provides satirical commentary on the figure's cowardice and incompetence. The print belongs to the Northern European tradition of political and military satire, where copper plate etching allowed artists to circulate criticism through reproducible images. Such sheets targeted public figures—generals, politicians, and military leaders whose conduct invited ridicule. The composition, with its exaggerated postures and moralizing inscriptions, became a visual language for popular protest and mockery. This tradition would later influence the sequential narrative and caricatural exaggeration foundational to modern comic art.
