Musicians
Erik Obermann's hand-colored lithograph depicts three musical performers in exaggerated caricature: a violinist in black coat with red necktie, a conductor or impresario in striped trousers and large bow tie, and a cellist in tan plaid jacket. This work participates in the long tradition of social satire descended from Gillray and Daumier—using distorted physiognomy and costume detail to mock class pretension, artistic pretense, or musical mediocrity. Lithography allowed such prints mass circulation and affordability, making caricature a popular vehicle for public commentary. The piece exemplifies how comic exaggeration, deployed through printmaking, became foundational to the visual language that would evolve into modern comic art.
