French Satire on the Rumored Death of William III
This Dutch-printed engraving mocks French reports of King William III's death during the War of the League of Augsburg. The composition depicts a procession of mourners bearing a coffin, their exaggerated poses and gestures typical of Northern European satirical prints. The etched lines and cross-hatching show the influence of seventeenth-century broadsheet tradition—visual propaganda meant for rapid, cheap distribution to the literate and semi-literate public. The print's bilingual text (Dutch and French) underscores its function as political ammunition in dynastic conflict. Such illustrated broadsides formed a direct lineage to later caricature traditions and eventually the sequential narrative panels of comic strips, combining image and text to ridicule public figures and current events.
