This hand-colored etching depicts three wading birds—stork, crane, and heron—arranged in hierarchical positions along a marshy shore, a visual pun on social rank. The Italian title references a governing body of mixed classes, with the tall stork representing nobility, the shorter crane the commons, and the intermediate heron the middle estate. The print belongs to the European tradition of animal allegory and social satire descending from 16th-century emblem books and 18th-century caricature. Like Gillray's political prints or German Bilderbogen sheets, it uses zoomorphic substitution to mock institutional absurdity and class pretension without naming individuals. The etched cross-hatching technique and muted brown palette were standard for satirical broadsides circulated during the Napoleonic era, when governments reorganized and traditional hierarchies faced challenge.
