Bombario, o doód: Te Ichendig in de nood (Bombario, or Death: In Distress in Need)

This Dutch engraving depicts a chaotic scene of moral instruction: the charlatan Bombario, caught between the living world (left, a grand classical interior filled with foolish patrons) and the realm of death (right), is led away by skeletal Death. Below, three vignettes show his fate and the consequences of deception. A product of the Northern European broadsheet tradition—similar to German and Dutch moral and political prints—this work combines theatrical narrative with didactic purpose. The engraving technique allows fine detail in costume and architectural setting, while the composition guides viewers through sequential scenes of judgment. Such prints preceded the comic strip by treating vice, folly, and consequence through visual storytelling, embedding social satire within popular entertainment.
