Student Life: Six Scenes of Mischief and Romance
This wood engraving from a Dutch student almanac presents six episodes of undergraduate pranks and courtship, arranged in a grid format descended from Hogarth's sequential narrative tradition. The scenes depict young men in top hats engaging in boisterous behavior—disrupting study, pursuing young women, gambling indoors, and carousing outdoors—rendered in the exaggerated proportions and comic distortions characteristic of 19th-century print satire. The ornamental border and decorative vignettes recall the Bilderbogen picture-sheets popular in German-speaking regions. This format—multiple comic scenes unified on a single page—directly anticipates the layout conventions of newspaper comic strips and early comic books. The work channels Rowlandson's raucous social observation while establishing visual strategies that would become foundational to sequential art.
