A Peep into Saldanha Bay or Dutch Perfidy Rewarded
This hand-colored etching mocks the Dutch naval surrender at Saldanha Bay during the Anglo-Dutch conflicts of the 1790s. Two British officers extract gold coins from a corpulent Dutch commander while figures cavort with treasure. Speech balloons contain taunts about unpaid debts and stolen money. The print exemplifies the tradition of political satire inherited from Hogarth and perfected by artists like Gillray and Rowlandson—where caricature and scatological humor served partisan ends. Such prints, distributed widely as broadsheets, established visual conventions of grotesquerie and bodily exaggeration that would later influence comic illustration and sequential narrative art.
