The Professor in School: A Jab at Petrus Hofstede
This Dutch copper engraving mocks a schoolmaster before his pupils and parents, part of a public controversy over educational methods. A well-dressed man gestures dramatically while addressing the gathered figures in a brick schoolroom, while the accompanying verse attacks his competence and character with crude humor and insult. The print exemplifies the 18th-century tradition of popular political satire—the Bilderbogen style that combined image and text to ridicule public figures through class-based caricature and personal invective. Such prints circulated widely as affordable social commentary, establishing visual conventions that would evolve into the sequential narrative art of comic strips and books.
