George Cruikshank's steel engraving illustrates a scene from Walter Scott's *Quentin Durward* (1823): a robed cardinal clings to a galloping horse, his vestments billowing, as a wild boar charges across the foreground through a wooded landscape. The fine cross-hatching and fluid line are characteristic of Cruikshank working in the reproductive engraving mode rather than his satirical etching style, yet the undignified tumbling cleric carries the comic-humiliating energy of his Regency caricature work. Cruikshank bridges Gillray's savage political prints and the Victorian illustrated narrative; his sequential story illustrations for Dickens and his own temperance 'Bottle' plates (1847) are direct ancestors of the comic strip's panel-by-panel storytelling tradition.
