Study for a *Punch* Drawing

This is a pencil study, worked up quickly in soft graphite before any block was cut. A stout man in a hat and loose jacket dominates the middle, gesturing as he holds up some small object; a slim young swell in a top hat looks on from the right, while at the left a girl steadies a large box against her hip. The setting is barely indicated, a few strokes for a wall and a framed picture behind. Drawings like this are the hidden half of the weekly cartoon, where the staging, the placement and reading order of the figures, was settled before the engraver ever saw it. The line is loose and searching, nothing like the crisp printed version it points toward. It lets us watch a *Punch* artist thinking on paper, blocking a scene the way a cartoonist roughs a panel.
